Backrooms: Code Yellow is a 1-6 player online co-op game about doing actual work in the Backrooms: you push into an infinite, procedurally generated complex, document everything that lives or stands down there, and return with enough data to fund the next day's dive. It launched on Steam in Early Access on September 21, 2026, from developer GameMechanic.
This site is a fan guide to that loop - what the job actually involves, how to survive the deeper areas, and what the developer has confirmed versus what the community is still figuring out. Everything is written for the live build, anything unconfirmed is labelled, and pages get re-checked as the game patches.
What the game actually is
- Survey work, not a story mode. The developer built it around "open ended exploration and research rather than a linear story" in the spirit of the Kane Pixels films. You choose how deep to push - and the deeper you go, the more danger you are inviting.
- An infinite procedural complex. Seed-style generation mixed with hand-tuned points of interest, so runs stay fresh without turning into noise. Travel far enough and the yellow rooms give way to differently coloured, differently furnished zones - all connected, with no loading screens.
- Tasks and funding. Confirmed job types include recording entities, photographing unusual architecture, recovering lost employees, installing remote cameras, and collecting strange objects for the lab. Completed work pays out funding for the next day.
- Built for 1-6 players online. You can play solo, but the task list and the threats are designed around a squad that splits duties and covers each other.
